STARTS, an acronym for Science, Technology, and Arts, represents an intersection ripe for innovation. Innovation is essential for overcoming the imminent social, ecological, and economic challenges in Europe. Through the S+T+ARTS initiative, the European Commission prioritizes projects and individuals capable of making significant strides in addressing these challenges. S+T+ARTS relies on the elements known as the STARTS Pillars, which encompass the various dimensions of STARTS activities. Diverse funded projects provide complementary opportunities and services. The STARTS.eu platform consolidates these pillars, aiming to bring together the entire STARTS Ecosystem.
RADICAL
The RADICAL Project - Research Agendas Developed in Creative Arts Labs- was funded by the European Commission's 5th Framework: Information Society Technologies Programme as the first major project led by women artists, the aim of which was to create a 'permanent platform for art and technology' through collaboration and creative innovation in teams. VOICE is part of that 'permanent platform' as several of the original RADICAL leaders are now central to VOICE. Over its two-year duration, the RADICAL project organised three significant international events and developed several new software prototypes for future enhancement. Additionally, it created a website and published materials offering best practices in creativity for the IST program. The project concluded in 2002 but the permanent platform and deep collaborations continue.
VERTIGO
The VERTIGO project is a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) supported by the H2020 Program of the European Commission. Its purpose is to support and coordinate these synergies at the European level. Through VERTIGO, artists collaborate within ICT-Project, infusing it with fresh, imaginative insights. By integrating artistic practices, they contribute to the innovative trajectory of your research, injecting creativity into the project's core. This symbiotic partnership not only enhances innovation process but also amplifies the dissemination of technology, fostering a dynamic exchange between science, technology, and the arts.
SMARTLAB
Established in 1992 by Prof Lizbeth Goodman in the UK, SMARTlab envisions a society of the future underpinned by a global education system that cherishes and rewards diversity, women, children, and wisdom as well as knowledge, drawing insights from a wide array of sources, elders and knowledge custodians. SMARTlab crafts innovative technology solutions with and for individuals of diverse cognitive and physical abilities at all 'levels' and at all life stages. The overarching goal is to empower individuals by enabling Inclusively Co-designed unrestricted access to education and open source creative tools, thereby fostering transformative experiences. SMARTlab has a Dublin 'hub' and national and global 'spoke' labs, collaborating with private industry, public smes, ngos and governments, universities and research institutes and has led EU projects since coordinating RADICAL.
